Small Ball - Youth Basketball Program
2014-10-10Welcome to the West End Steelers Small Ball Basketball Program.
Greetings Parents/Guardians,
You are receiving this email as you have your child registered for the 2014 / 2015 Steelers Small Ball (SSB) Program.
We are pleased to inform you that your child is registered in the Wednesday sessions which are held at the Westmount Elementary School gym.
The Wednesday session at Westmount school is scheduled to begin Wednesday Oct. 20th at 6:00pm
Prior to the start date of the Small Ball program you will receive a second reminder message from your Small Ball Volunteer Coaches.
The Steelers Small Ball (SSB) Youth Basketball program is designed to develop fundamental skills, sportsmanship and a love of the game of basketball. This initiative supports and empowers our community-based West End Steeler Basketball Club in an effort to positively influence youth through basketball. The goal of the program is to build character, discipline, self-esteem and sportsmanship.
West End Steelers Webpage: www.westendsteelers.com
Opening Night: Wednesday Oct 22nd , 2014
Session Times: Wendesday’s 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Location: Westmount School, 6700 Edward Arab Ave, Hfx
Program Duration: March Break 2015
Cancellations: A regular policy is that if the school is closed or cancelled for any reason, like assemblies or storms, then we will be cancelled as well.
Also please make sure that you check out the gym cancellation schedule posted on our website located at www.westendsteelers.com It will be updated regularly.
Other known cancelled sessions will be communicated via email.
Coaches Philosophy: We will be spending much of our time having FUN. We will be using games and activities to enhance the learning of basketball and movement. Most nights at the start we will be focused on smaller groups in designated stations working on drills and skills of the game. We will only begin to scrimmage when we feel the children are ready, which typically is after the Holiday Break in December.
As parents I wouldn't expect to see anything resembling a typical basketball scrimmage until the second half of the program. We do not want the children to become frustrated or pressured in a game situation if they are not ready. Please keep in mind that even though some activities may not seem directly related to basketball the goal is to provide an atmosphere of fun while building a foundation of movement and coordination which will support the required skills of basketball.
Goals for the Season: To have each child gain a better understanding and appreciation for the game of basketball while having fun doing it.
Jerseys, Balls and Attire: Jerseys will be provided at the beginning of the program and are yours to keep. Please have your child wear shorts, t-shirt and proper footwear. Take note that we will not allow any child to play in foot wear that is unsuitable for court sports. ( i.e. Crocs.)
The Steeler Small Ball program will also be supplying the balls, so it is not necessary to bring balls from home.
For safety reasons it is required that jewelry like rings, necklaces and earrings be removed prior to each session. Also during the winter months please be mindful to not track slush and water onto the basketball court because it could cause someone to slip.
Water: It is advised to bring a water bottle with your child's name on it. The gym can get quite warm and we will be providing water breaks throughout each session.
Other: Please discourage your child from running through the halls of the school and playing on the stage. If you bring other children with you we ask that they remain off the gym floor during the entire session. Also, as a reminder the seating along the gym floor is very close to the action so watch for stray and flying balls.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
On behalf of the Steeler Basketball Club
Thanks.....and Go Steelers!
